Gender equality, also known as sexual equality or gender egalitarianism, refers to the state of equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender

Overview

Gender equality, also known as sexual equality or gender egalitarianism, refers to the state of equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender. The United Nations, through agencies like UNICEF, defines gender equality as the enjoyment of the same rights, resources, opportunities, and protections by women, men, girls, and boys. As of 2017, gender equality is the fifth of seventeen sustainable development goals (SDG 5) of the United Nations, aiming to achieve equal economic participation, decision-making, and valuing of different behaviors, aspirations, and needs. Despite progress, gender inequality persists, with the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Reports measuring it annually. The pursuit of gender equality involves addressing the social, economic, and cultural barriers that prevent individuals from reaching their full potential, regardless of their gender. Organizations like the [[united-nations|United Nations]], [[unicef|UNICEF]], and [[amnesty-international|Amnesty International]] have been instrumental in promoting gender equality globally. The [[world-health-organization|World Health Organization]] has also played a crucial role in addressing gender-based violence and promoting health equity. With the rise of social media platforms like [[twitter|Twitter]] and [[facebook|Facebook]], awareness about gender equality has increased, but there is still much work to be done to achieve true equality.
