Overview

Magnetars are a type of neutron star with extremely powerful magnetic fields, emitting high-energy electromagnetic radiation, particularly X-rays and gamma rays. Proposed by Robert Duncan and Christopher Thompson in 1992, magnetars have been widely accepted as the explanation for soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). With 24 confirmed magnetars as of 2021, scientists continue to study these mysterious objects, including their potential connection to fast radio bursts (FRBs) using telescopes like the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP).
